Kalyspo is an Open Source software project, that can be used as a general modelling system. It is focused mainly on numerical simulations in water management such as generation of concepts for flood prevention and protection or risk managment. The application is published on SourceForge.net.

The concept of Kalypso was collaboratively developed by the company Björnsen consulting engineers (BCE) and the department of river and coastal engineering at the Technical University of Hamburg-Harburg (DRCE), Germany.

Project Structure

The project is basically separated into Kalypso and the Kalypso Applications

Kalypso

Kalypso is divided into six modules, i. e. four calculation modules, one complex inundation area modeling module and an evacuation tool.

  • Kalypso Hydrology (rainfall-runoff-simulation)
  • Kalypso WSPM (one-dimensional steady simulation)
  • Kalypso 1D/2D (couppled 1d/2d unsteady simulation)
  • Kalypso Flood (inundation area modeling)
  • Kalypso Risk (potential flood damage calculation)
  • Kalypso Evacuation (evacuation strategy tool)

These modules consist of a basic common functionalities block, called KalypsoBASE and are published under the LGPL license as Open Source.

Kalypso Applications

Kalypso Applications as well as Kalypso products are implemented as "rich clients", which provide the user with a powerful set of features for his specialized tasks. Typical applications include decision support systems and modeling systems in the areas of water management and ecology.

KalypsoBASE is a tool kit for developing applications with a focus on spatial (GIS-analysis) and possibly temporal (time-series analysis and processing) aspects which run within the Eclipse development environment.

Below you can find a list of software projects, that are using KalypsoBASE:

nofdp IDSS

nofdp nature-oriented flood damage prevention has been designed by the Hessian Ministry for Environment, Rural Areas and Consumer Protection in the context of the EU INTERREG III B program in order to provide means for environmentally oriented flood protection measures.

The nofdp IDSS (nature-oriented flood damage prevention Information and Decision Support System) was designed as a special tool for planners and decision-makers in water associations. Thus, they are provided with a tool for the preliminary planning phase which allows them to have an integrative view on river catchment areas in order to improve flood damage protection taking aspects of spatial planning, water resources management and ecology into account.
