52°North
From GISWiki
52°North is an open membership organization that develops open source software under the GNU General Public License. Its name refers to the degree of latitude which intersects the city of Muenster, Germany - the home of its founding organizations. Their focus is on interoperable web services and data encoding models which constitute the technical building blocks of Spatial Data Infrastructures (SDIs). These infrastructures shall promote the exchange and application of spatial data. Within this context, they particularly strive for the development of novel web services that provide functionality for SDI management, the integration of real time geosensor data and spatio-temporal simulation models into SDIs, and mobile geocomputing. In a nutshell, they explore technological horizons beyond web mapping. This differentiates 52°North from many other free software development initiatives in the geographic information domain.
